Shamrockville V Cole Harbor:
Game 1
The Patriots look to reset after their disappointing season openers against Oxford, by booking their yearly tilt with the Butchers from Cole Harbor. These two games were like banging ugly step sisters. You don’t really relish the scores, but they all count so……..
The 1st game sees the Patriots at home and they open the scoring 5:12 into the first on a crease crashing effort by Hathaway, seeking to get out of the Patriots coaches doghouse. Former Butcher Nick Bjugstad and retiring Patrice Bergeron both getting assist markers on the goal.
At 6:48 Ekholm sends a break out pass to Robertson, who slides a nice saucer pass to an open Mark Scheifele to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead. James Reimer looks like he’s in for a long night.
A tripping call sends Trenin to the box at 9:36, but the Butchers can’t seem to find the score sheet on the ensuing PP, Darcy Kuemper keeping the shut out alive for the time being.
At 13:12 a near identical play see’s Scheifele pot his 2nd of the game on a pass from Robertson on the break out pass from Brent “Caveman” Burns.
Déjà vu hits hard in this period as Oleksiak feeds a pass to Robertson again, who spots Scheifele for his hat trick goal at 14:00. Reimer is at least winning a few goalie Bingo slots so it’s not all doom and gloom on the Cole Harbor bench.
The Patriots take a 4-0 lead into the dressing room after the first period of play.
The 2nd Period see’s Nick Bjugstad again on the score sheet against his former team, this time scoring on a feed from Hathaway at the 2:00 minute mark, returning the favor, and Esa Lindell.
Things get a little chippy at this point with the Butchers, rightfully so, after the keg taps on their bench are turned off for “line cleaning” during the 2nd period.
Artem Zub takes offense, complaining that he’s only just left the Patriots squad and should be treated better, and Bergeron gets sent off with him for saying he’d be without beer anyhow because even if he were still in Shamrockville, he’d still be on the taxi squad. Some minor pushing and shoving ensues at 8:48 and each player sits for 2:00.
At 10:12, Hathaway again gets sent off for 2:00 and his up and down season continues.
At 12:00, tempers finally flare up and newly acquired Butcher, living up to the name, Bowen Byram takes a run at Jamie Oleksiak and gets him square in the numbers 5’ from the boards. The NNHL Player Safety Dept will have to review this one. Oleksiak is ruled out for the game and Byram gets no penalty, infuriating the home team.
At 16:24 Scheifele and former Pats Barbashev “discuss” the merits of retaliation for such dirty play, and both go for 2:00 to cool off.
The 2nd period ends and both teams take a break from the hostilities.
The third period sees a fresh faced J.J. Peterka take a nice feed from Gustafsson and Edmundson, at :48 to put the Butchers on the score board.
Near the 2:00 mark, Scheifele’s bid for a fourth goal is stopped by a sliding Edmundson to deny the festivities.
Barbashev, once again goes to the box at 4:24, this time for 4:00 however, to pretty much seal this one. Matt Tkachuk, looking to atone for his abysmal performance against Oxford, tallies a PP marker at 5:12 on a good individual effort to put the Patriots up 6-1.
Crouse and Peterka go for 2:00 each at 11:36 and Tkachuk takes a 2:00 break at 17:12 to round out the box score.
Shamrockville 44 shots, 9 quality for 6 goals
Cole Harbor 26 shots, 4 quality for 1 goal.
Of note, Connor McDavid was completely listless and absent from the box score in any fashion at all. Pining for the fjords perhaps.
Game 2:
Talk about déjà vu folks….
Nick Bjugstad puts on a clinic against his former team. At the tail end of the first shift, he watches as his team mates head off for a line change and just undresses the Butcher squad, rifling a shot past Reimer on a solid individual effort at the 2:00 mark.
Tkachuk takes 2:00 for unsportsmanlike conduct for taunting the Buthcers bench at 2:12 and refrains from making eye contact with head coach O’Sheigh for the remainder of the period.
The Butchers seem lost until Bowen Byram, once again, shoulders his team and rips a PP marker, bar down against Hellebuyck to tie the game. Former Pats Tage Thompson puts the biscuit on the tape for Byram here and both young players look forward to many more goals.
At 7:12, ageless wonder Bergeron spots Lindell at the opposing blue line, threads a pass to him and Lindell slap passes the puck to a wide open Nick Bjugstad for his second goal of the game.
At 10:00, Scheifele gets the gift wrapped puck at the side of the net on some blistering passing from Burns and Tkachuk to put the Patriots up 3-1.
This time, the Butchers aren’t going to go so quietly though and once again the notorious Bowen Byram puts Esa Lindell into the infirmary, requiring 22 stitches after a cheap cross checking incident catches the Pats defender up high.
To add insult to injury, literally….Byram takes the ensuing faceoff win from Thompson and Boqvist and rips his second goal of the game to pull the Butchers back to 3-2 down.
At 18:24, Lindell show why he’s one of the premier defender in the league as, even with his injury (-3), he goes on a rampage, firing 3 shots on net before a worn out Reimer finally see’s one of those shots sneak past him for a 4-2 Patriots lead after 1 period of play. (Let's be honest here, he was shooting against a 0 winger, a 2 defenseman and a 2 center)
The 2nd period again see’s poor defensive awareness off opening draws by the Pats, and Joel Edmundson makes them pay, taking a nice feed from Gustafsson and Thompson, who terrorizes his former team most of the game. Butchers are again within one, being down 4-3.
Bjugstad takes a pass from Bergeron at 10:12, and does the rest himself, toe dragging a Butchers defender, he rips a shot blocker side for his hat trick goal and restoring the Pats 2 goal lead.
The rest of the 2nd period sees the goalies get into a groove and both are good here, stopping a good number of quality chances to keep it reasonably close.
The gas tank seems to be finally empty on the Butchers bench in the 3rd period and Tkachuk takes advantage at 5:36, alone against 3 Butchers he finds a way to put one past Reimer to make it 6-3.
At 9:36, Tkachuk again is the trigger man on a deft passing play from Scheifele and Robertson and the Pats are up 7-3.
Jamie Oleksiak gets a little sweet revenge at 11:12 as he lets an absolute bomb go from the point to put the Patriots up 8-3.
Former Butcher McNabb get’s into a bit of a scrum with Byram, but lets the youngster go rather than pummel him senseless at 12:48, and the rest of the game is history.
Again…of note…No sign of McDavid anywhere on the score sheet. Coach MacKinnon taking that as a moral victory to be sure.
Shamrockville 50 shots, 11 quality, 8 goals
Cole Harbor, 43 shots, 10 quality, 3 goals. (Yeah I had to add that up again, 43 shots and 10 hard, yikes)
Patriots are 3-1-0
