Belfast and Bonavista's games were temporarily delayed due to the Patriots bus being stuck in the snow outside the Bruisers arena. Intimidation tactics in the parking lot to start the series perhaps?
After a slight delay, the puck drops only to see Bergeron, a mere ;24 into the game, fire a bullet labeled for the bottom corner, but a sliding Lindgren steers the hard shot to the corner. Lindgren is flopping all over the ice, stopping a Nichushkin rocket at 1:12. Finally at 1:36 Jeff Petry pick off a bad pass up the middle by the bruisers and pounces on the FC goal at 1:36. Patriots manhandling the Bruisers thus far. At 9:12, Nichushkin again has a shot blocked, this time by McDonagh. 10:48 see's an irate Johansen sent off for two, leaving both the Brusisers and Patriots bench to wonder who put the bee in his Swedish bonnet. Whatever bee it is, it seems to really rile up those Swedes as Eriksson-Ek skates off fuming at 11:12 to negate the PP. With the clock winding down, Danault converts a pass from Meier to send the Patriots up 2-0 at the intermission. Markstrom is earning his keep through 1.
Markstrom needs to pay back whatever the Bruisers were paying him in the 2nd. At 4:00 Hamilton goes for 2 after taking liberties with the Phil Kessels hot dog vendor, and Landeskog makes him pay in mustard at 4:24. Landeskog then doubles down at 4:48 to ensure that the Bruisers are thoroughly demoralized. Patriots up 4-0. Ex-Patriot Tomas Nosek takes 2 min for high sticking at 6:00 but the Bruisers kill this one off effectively. Trying to fire up the bench at 7:12, Anthony Cirelli drops the gloves with a Patriots defenseman, and one can only assume that his visor had to be obscuring his vision when he grabbed his target, because one Nikko Mikola certainly tunes him in to his mistake. On the breakout pass, Hakanpaa's stick explodes and gifts a shot to a lurking Lindgren, who get all of that puck, only to be denied by Hellebuyck. Play goes back and forth until Alex Carriere trips up Captain Bergeron at 10:48. Meier makes sure to take his vengeance out on the score sheet and pots a PP marker at 11:12. Nichushkin gets reacquainted with another ex-Patriot in Oskar Lindblom at 13:36, 2 minutes each for roughing. At 18:28, Meier again takes a slick feed from Thompson to put the Patriots up 6-0 after two periods.
The third starts out promising enough with Lindgren again blocking a surefire goal by Robertson a mere :48 into the third. That would be the lone bright spot for the bruisers though, as noted pugilist Johansen again goes stir crazy over something and is sent for 2 minutes at 6:24. Meier is once again the trigger man on the PP and rips a shot to the back of the net at 7:12. Cirelli, clearly not having had enough, gets 2 minutes for slew footing at 8:24 and this time Eriksson-Ek finds twine at 9:36 for a PP marker of his own. Brandon Carlo, suddenly finding some open space fires a shot that beats a frustrated Markstrom at 13:36 for a 9-0 lead. Hamilton gets into a shoving match after the whistle and is sent off at 19:36 to secure the shut out. Patriots win 9-0
2 A wins and 3 AA wins tilt the faceoffs to 29-18 for the Patriots
Patriots were 54 shots with 13 hard, 1 FC hard for 1 FC Goal, 4 PP Goals and 4 Goals. -
Bruisers were 18 shots with 3 hard for 0 goals.
Game 2 in Bonavista:
The return game in Bonavista showed the difference that some rather suspect ice can make in a game. Both teams struggle mightily to generate any good chances in this one.
The first period see's Landeskog lose his marbles, drops his gloves to find them and is mistakenly assumed to be looking for a fight. Since the Bruisers, aren't really bruisers and have no fighters on the squad, the ref's send Landeskog off for 4 minutes to collect his favorite cat eye agate. 4:48 see's another ex-Patriots (How many does Bonavista have you ask?), Dylan Strome rifle a shot on goal, but a desperate slide by Hakanpaa preserves the scoreless game with a prime time block. 8:48 sees Johansen again swinging his stick at air, and sitting for 2 minutes. What the hell is wrong with these damned Swedes? Hamilton blocks a sure goal from Tage Thompson at 9:36 to preserve the Bruisers end of the 0-0 tie. No harm done on the PP and the teams trade turnovers until Lawson Crouse is sent off for 2 at the 13:36 mark. Just before that penalty expires, Johansen ....again...at 15:12 is sent off for two. The Bruisers coach sends for some information from the medical team, asking if Johansen has been taking his med's recently. Not to be outdone, Patriots Trenin is sent off for two at 16:24, completely muddying up the lines for both coaches. It seems a 0-0 tie after one is to be had, however Bergeron has something to say about that. The goal is reviewed, but it stands at 19:59.7 to send the Patriots up 1-0 after the first frame.
The second period see's more rubber sent at Markstrom, but again, mostly from the periphery as neither team can seem to find any quality angles to fire from. Lindell is tagged for 2 minutes at the 4:00 mark, but nothing materializes for the Bruisers on this chance. Carriere at 7:36, sends the Patriots to the man advantage, again with no hard shots generated. At 11:36 Konecny sends the puck over the glass and goes for two minutes for delay of game. Patriots RW Nichushkin generates 5 shots alone on this PP and finally slams one home on the 2nd rebound attempt to put the Patriots up 2-0 at 12:00. Carriere continues the blocked shot clinic the Bruisers have going and stuffs a Meier attempt at 13:36, and another by Thompson at 19:36 to keep things at 2-0 after two periods.
The third is as slow as the first two, with neither team generating many quality opportunities to speak of. Landeskog again chirps to much on the faceoff and is sent for two minutes at 2:00. Keller goes at 3:12 to offset some of the PP, but both teams seem disjointed rolling out PK and PP lines haphazardly. Play is scrum like until Thompson finally bats a puck out of the air at 16:48 past a surprised Markstrom to post the Patriots to a 3-0 lead. Carlo blocks a lack luster effort by Cirelli at 18:24 and that's all she wrote. Patriots win 3-0.
3 A and 2 AA faceoff wins tilt the faceoffs to Patriots side by a 20-16 margin.
Patriots were 49 shots for 4 Hard, 1 FC Hard - 1 PP goal and 2 goals.
Bruisers were 20 shots for 2 hard - 0 goals.
Patriots finish the season at 19-2-1-0.
Damned Tristan Jarry and his Rask webbing and Larry Chang's "lucky" dice ;-).
