A rare evening tilt see's the Moose fly in to Shamrockville to take on the Patriots on Wednesday.
The jet lag was evident right from the initial faceoff, as the Patriots swarmed all over the Moose defensive zone often and early.
Dominating the Moose' centers 13-3 in the opening frame leads to a Timo Meier goal that is screened in by a gassed Dante Fabbro at the 8:24 mark of the 1st period. Three shifts later, Fabbro makes up for that mistake by blocking another Meier hard shot. Unfortunately the shot off Fabbros skates ends up on Alex Formenton's stick, who snaps in a wrister on the open side, extending the Patriots lead to 2-0. Ekholm and Hakanpaa get opportunities on the forecheck (eyeroll here), but are turned away easily by Oettinger. The Moose escape down only 2 goals to regroup for the 2nd period.
The second period starts off where the first ended. Kirby Dach and Meier are both sent off for roughing at 1:36 and just as the teams get back to 5v5, Danault rifles a shot off two posts and in at 2:48 of the second period to extend the lead to 3-0. Landeskog capitalizes off a poor line change and goes with "The Forsberg" to improve the Pat's lead to 4-0 at 6:00. At 11:12 Marchment and Mercer get tangled up after the play and are both sent off for 2 minutes. Hakanpaa takes an ill advised slashing call at 12:00 and the Moose go to the first powerplay of the evening. Unfortunately for them, Brent Burns and Coleman take advantage of a Moose miscue and go in on a 2-1 shorthanded opportunity, where Burns hits the magical 1-3 SH and is further screened in by a sliding Fabbro again, for the 5th Patriots goal of the game. Attempting to even things up, the ref's call Thompson for hooking at 17:12 and Coleman for slashing at 19:36. The Moose captain, Stamkos, pots a PP marker at 18:24 to get the Moose on the scoreboard at 5-1, but nothing else seems to be going right for the Moose.
The third period fares no better for the beleaguered Moose, and even with Lindell in the box at 2:48, the best opportunities come from the Patriots penalty killers. Danault capitalizes on a Burns break out pass and goes blocker side on Oettinger to make the game 6-0 at 8:48. Robertson, who has been at the center of trade rumors lately, was again ineffectual seeing 3 #, 2 5's and 3 I in this game, goes to the box at 12:00, much to the relief of the Patriots fans who can't wait to see him shipped out of town with his 16 MQ card. The Moose discuss whether they can decline the penalty as they see Formenton come on the ice for the PK. Turns out they were right to do so as Formenton pots the 2nd SH goal of the game at 13:36 to seal the 7-1 drubbing and clubbing of the Moose from Brandon.
Patriots were 16+11+16 for 43 shots, 8 quality, 2 SH, 0 PP for 7 goals. Patriots held a 35-13 advantage in the faceoff circle, but only 2 steals with the A. Patriots gave up 5 FC opportunities.
Moose were 3+6+6 for 15 shots, 2 quality for 1 goal. Moose gave up 2 FC opportunities.
After some pizza refueling and a calming period, the Patriots fly in to Brandon to get game 2 on the go.
The return affair in Brandon see's the Moose bounce back somewhat. Marchment is sent to the box at 2:48 for roughing, and though the Moose have a couple of shots on goal, they can't seem to put a quality opportunity on net. The Patriots refocus and start peppering Oettinger with shots, many close in, quality chances, but the Moose goal tender stands his ground in this game, turning aside all shot she faces in the opening frame. It seems that the FC gods have again come in to haunt the Patriots, as they give up another 3 in the opening frame and the Moose turn one of those into a Jeff Skinner FC goal at 16:24 to stake the Moose to a 1-0 lead after one, despite being out shot 20-8 and out chanced 3-1. Nichushkin goes off for 2 minutes at 18:24, but the only quality chance goes to Tom Wilson, who is stoned by Oettinger.
The second period finally see's Oettinger crumble under the continued onslaught of shots. Bergeron finds twine at the 8:00 mark on a feed from Marchment and Nichushkin. At 11:12 Moose top line center Kuznetsov takes an ill advised hooking call and Lawson Crouse make him pay at 11:36 on the PP. Lindell from Meier and Danault, makes it 3-1 Patriots at 12:48 and Nichushkin from Meier and Petry makes it 4-1 Patriots at 16:24. The Moose are losing steam as the evening wears on, and thankfully are headed to the third and final period.
Fabbro who seems to be involved all over the ice in both games, takes a penalty at 4:48 of the third, but the Patriots can't capitalize, as once again they are snake bitten by the Robertson curse. This loaf has to go. The patriots are shooting from everywhere, aided by a couple of lengthy rebounding series, but can't seem to find as many ranges as one would think. Robertson, perhaps in his final act as a Patriot, takes a water skiing penalty at 11:36 and would never see the ice again in this game. Thankfully, Tom "The Real Deal" Wilson picks up his slack and pot's the Patriots 3rd SH goal in two games at 13:12. Joel Eriksson-Ek rounds out the scoring at 16:24 for a 6-1 Shamrockville victory on the road.
Patriots were 20+18+30 for 68 shots, 14 quality, 1 PP, 1 SH and 6 goals total. Patriots give up 7 FC opportunities
Moose were 8+7+5 for 20 shots, 6 quality, 1 FC, 0 PP, 0 SH and 1 goal total. Moose give up 2 FC opportunities.
Patriots are now 14-2-0-0
