Game 1 - In Brandon - Starting Goalies: BM - Oettinger, VFS - Ullmark
Fans packed the stands in Brandon to see the Moose take on the Flying Sutters (or it could have been because it was fan appreciation night with free Moose antler hats), and they would not be disappointed! Laughton opened the scoring for the visitors midway through the first, only to have the Moose tie it after the ensuing faceoff with an unassisted snipe from Stamkos. The Moose worked over the Flying Sutters for the rest of the period and carried the momentum into the second with Amadio scoring on the first play of the second. Viking then started to get under the skin of the Moose players as Brandon took 5 penalties (2 were coincidental) in the second, allowing Martinook to tip in a shot from Gallagher for his first of the year.
Just before the intermission, the Brandon coach was seen having a heated discussion with the ref after all of the penalties, which seemed to work as Viking was immediately assessed a minor after the opening faceoff of the third. Despite Viking killing that penalty, a broken stick led to Mercer scoring on a breakaway to give the Moose the lead again. The Flying Sutters managed to tie it a minute later on a blast from Jeannot, but the refs couldn't have that, so they assessed another penalty to Viking. Stamkos wasted no time in potting his second goal of the game to give the Moose the lead again. A point shot from Bouchard tied it up again about half way through the third, which it stayed until the end of regulation, giving Viking a rare point.
The reports of what happened during the break before OT is spotty at best, but some sources say they saw the refs all wearing those sweet, sweet Moose antler hats before starting OT, which caused some to think there may be some collusion here, especially as Huberdeau was given two minutes for an untied skate. Kirby Dach scored the OT winner on the powerplay to give Brandon the win on what was a very entertaining (if not contentious) game.
Final: Brandon 5 - Viking 4 (OT)
Shots: Brandon 42 (10 Hard), Viking 33 (7 Hard)
3 Stars
1. Stamkos - 2G, 1A
2. Laughton - 1G, 1A
3. Dach - 1G (OT Winner)
Game 2 - At the Sutterdome - Starting Goalies: BM - Oettinger, VFS - Forsberg
After the barn burner in game 1, expectations were high for game two, especially when Viking's protests about collusion were rejected by league office, whose official representative was seen wearing an oddly familiar antler hat. Pageau opened the scoring early in the first from a sweet feed from Stamkos. Jeannot answered back around midway through to tie it. There was pretty tight checking for the rest of the period and until near the end of the second when Jeff Skinner decided to put the team on his back, and scored twice on the same shift while 4-on-4, to make it 3-1 at the end of two. When the Viking bench saw the refs come out for the third all wearing antler helmets, they knew it was going to be a rough third. Viking was assessed 5 consecutive penalties, including a penalty to Forsberg for doing his Hextall impersonation, to make it a 5-on-3. Brandon had a powerplay for over 3 consecutive minutes, including 2:00 of 5-on-3 (Viking had three guys in the box for almost a minute), that Viking not only managed to kill, but was able to score shorthanded, Scott Laughton getting the tally, at the tail end of the last penalty. The constant penalties stymied any hope of a comeback, and Brandon locked it down defensively to hold on for the win.
Final: Brandon 3 - Viking 2
Shots: Brandon 43 (10 Hard), Viking 33 (3 Hard)
3 Stars
1. Skinner - 2G
2. Laughton - 1G, 1A
3. Forsberg - Stopped 7/10 high danger chances
