Game 1
In this years tilt across the pond, Belfast flies into Chelsea for a Thursday matinee game.
As the players take the ice, Coach O'Sheigh can be heard muttering about how small the arena seemed, and wondered why all of the Daggers players were under 5'8".
Turns out, it's thought that the entire Chelsea squad had the ".25 cent pints on Wednesday" sickness and the Chelsea under 16's were pressed into service instead of defaulting.
An absolute dog's breakfast followed with the visiting Patriots steamrolling the poor young lads impersonating the real Daggers.
The substitute "Ovechkin" for instance, could only muster 3 icings, 2 stoppages and a lone 5 in his touches of the puck. Not to be outdone by skill however, the youngsters turned the game into a cheap shot affair. Esa Lindell being the first victims of the on ice hooligans a mere :48 into teh first period. He had to be helped off the ice from the blatant knee on knee from a suspect "Reese" hit. He'd be unavailable for the rest of the period while x-rays came back negative.
Not to be outdone by a bunch of pre-pubescent knuckle draggers, Hakanpaa returns the favor at 2:12 with an elbow to Lehners head while cruising through the crease. Lehner and his 12 tweeting birds was stretchered off and presumably buried without honors.
The teams trade cheap shots until, once again, Hakanpaa takes matters into his own hands and drives the net ruthlessly to snap poor young Swayman in half around a post. Swayman was also stretchered off, ne'er to be seen again this night.
SO a supposed "1 in 50,000 chance" has now been proven utterly false by the Patriots in the span of a mere 2 games. EBUG's must return!!!!
The savagery on the ice results in zero goals being scored, but the Zamboni had to be outfitted with ammonia cleanser to scrape all the blood from the ice surface after the 1st period.
Belfast outshoots Chelsea 16-3 in the period, with the tattered remnants of the Daggers goaltending manages to stop a decent chance from Tage Thompson late.
Before the second period the ref's speak to each coach and lay down the law to prevent this getting out of hand.
Thompson takes advantage of the Daggers bench being distracted during the zoom call and pots the first goal of the game on a feed from Meier.
Landeskog of the Patriots scoffs at the ref's monologue and get's 2 minutes for mocking the officials at 2:24. No damage done with the only chances actually coming from the Patriots Formenton but he can't seem to find the net despite the gaping chasm of a cage in front of him.
Former Patriot Marcus Pettersson goes for water skiing at 4:36 and despite the Patriots taking 5 shots against a taped together cardboard cutout of Swayman, they can't put another past whoever this impostor is.
Landeskog, being somewhat annoyed by the ref's previous indiscretion, blows past the youngsters and drops a "Forsberg" on a hapless goalie to extend the Patriots lead to 2-0 at 6:48.
Thompson puts away an obviously fired up Landeskogs pass at 10:12 to push the lead to 3-0. The hooliganism continues as Nichuskin get's slew footed in the corner at 17:12 and has to go for stitches, out for the remainder of the period.
The 2nd period ends mercifully for the Daggers, with a specious call against Niko Mikkola at the 20:00 mark.
The 3rd period sees the U-16's running out of gas, and not mustering anything on the ensuing PP, while Formenton and Lindell each blast shots from the circles only to be denied short handed.
At 5:36 Meier and Braun have words and are each sent off for hot dogs and scones for 2 minutes to cool off.
A routine shot by Carlo at the 6:00 mark, somehow finds its way through traffic on a perfect 1-2-1 shot that beats "Swayman" and the Patriots are up 4-0.
A mere 1:36 later, Bergeron is hauled down on a breakaway and is awarded a penalty shot, but feeling sorry for these poor kids, decides to shoot the puck wide to lessen the humiliation.
Gabriel Landeskog, lacking such weak emotions, pounds a puck past the junior goalie off a feed from Hakanpaa to make it 5-0 at 9:36.
Danault fires a rocket destined for the top corner, but somehow a rather short "Chara" manages to get a foot in front to block the sure goal at 10:48.
Not to be denied, Danault at 12:24 and Marchment at 12:48 seal the deal and push the Patriots up 7-0.
Some minor shenanigans and face washings occur, but nothing of note after that and the Patriots coast to the 7-0 win in Chelsea.
Belfast 45 shots, 11 quality for 7 goals.
Chelsea 21 shots, 2 quality for 0 goals.
Game 2
Deja Vu anyone?
The obviously rested and hydrated Daggers show up in Belfast, looking to exact some revenge for their kid counterparts.
Unfortunately, Thompson, again at 1:12, puts the Patriots up by one early. Meier celebrates a bit too vigorously for the officials and gets a 2 min unsportsmanlike penalty at 2:36 to send the Daggers onto the PP. No damage done on the ensuing PP for the Daggers and the teams trade chances until Pettersson and Lindell are each sent off at 7:12. The game is chippy and see's Meier and Marchand getting offsetting minor penalties at 12:48 as the ref's try to keep the lid on this pressure cooker.
At 14:28 Oleksiak crushes Tanev into the boards, and the Daggers defender was left wobbly knee'd and starry eyed -3 for the remainder.
Hakanpaa takes a penalty at 14:24 and Ovechkin is taken down at the 16:00 mark and awarded a penalty shot to even things out for the series there.
He makes no mistake and rifles a wrister past Kuemper to knot the game up at 1-1.
Landeskog has a glorious opportunity to put the Patriots back in front, but a sliding Girodano blocks a surefire goal to keep the score even at 16:24.
The Daggers skate off with a 1-1 tie after the 1st period and are feeling better about their chances.
Queue the 2nd period onslaught....at 2:36, Esa Lindell sneaks down from the point to collect a tic tac toe pass from Danault and Thompson to put the Patriots up 2-1.
Seconds later Chara catches Meier admiring a pass and sends him over the boards into the bench. Meier was shaken up but only minor damage for a -1 for the remainder.
9:36 sees Thompson, again behind the Chelsea defenders take a pass from Danault and Mikkola and put one 5 hole through Lehner to extend the lead to 3-1. 10:12 sees Oleksiak bomb his 1-4-1 range with another 1-2-1 shot, only to be denied by Lehner. 11:12 sees Mikkola rifle a shot on his 1-7-1 range, but again is stoned by Lehner in close.
Pettersson closes his hand on the puck at 11:36 to send the Patriots to the PP, and as Coach Ement blasts the ref's he is given a bench minor for his troubles at the 12:00 mark. But despite the 2 man advantage and 5 shots on goal, the Patriots can't solve Lehner on this opportunity.
Leave it to Captain Bergeron though, as he takes a feed from Nichushkin and makes no mistake at 19:12 to notch another Patriots marker.
Each coach get's his lines organized after the penalty disruptions, but the Patriots are caught with too many men on the ice for a bench minor of their own at 19:12. The Daggers power play is anemic, and musters no opportunities here.
Patriots up 4-1 after 2.
The 3rd is actually some good hockey....well for the Patriots at least...and Crouse and Chara square off for a major league tilt at 7:12 to give each bench a boost.
Lehner is strong in this period and does his best to keep his team in it, but the Daggers just can't seem to get anything going. Logan Coutuer takes a penalty at 13:12 to finalize any ink on the score sheet.
Patriots again cruise to a 4-1 victory.
Belfast is 49 shots, 12 quality with 4 goals
Chelsea is 20 shots with 3 quality, 1 Penalty Shot Goal
This was absolutely the most unlucky game I think I've witnessed. The Daggers couldn't hit a shot let alone a range to save their collective souls. It wasnt like the good guys didnt see the puck, it was just horrendous rolls on the cards that made these games lopsided.
Belfast is now 12-2-0-0.
