The tale of 2 games resolved by luck alone.
Game 1
In game 1 in Belfast, the Patriots get out to a good start with Petry scoring at 2:48 of the 1st period on the PP with Kucherov sitting in the box for tripping.
Lybushkin takes another penalty at 16:00 but the Patriots Timo Meier is denied by Sorokin on an open net, with a brilliant double stack pad save.
Unfortunately, Danault does find twine at 19:54 of the 1st to extend the lead to 2-0 after one.
Zibanajad get's absolutely steam rolled by Niko Mikkola at 13:12, and is transported to Belfast Regional Hospital for testing. He would not return.
Nichushkin gives up a broken stick break away to Seguin, but Seguin misfires and rings one off the post and out.
Patriots up 2-0 after one.
The Mammoths come out with some inspired play to start the 2nd and with Carlo in the box for the third time in the game, Ekman-Larson pounds a PP goal past Kuemper to bring them within one at 2:48.
The teams trade chances in the 2nd but both goalies are good until Robertson finally solves Sorokin again to give the Patriots a 3-1 lead at 10:00.
The Patriots go up by a 4-1 margin at 16:00 on a deflection by Thompson on a nice slap pass from Oleksiak. Oleksiak then follows that up with a crushing check on Ekblad, leaving the Mammoths defender wobbly and nursing a sore leg.
Off the ensuing face off, Mikkola again targets a Mammoth and crushes Sorkin who was out of the net to play the puck. Sorkin was stretchered off at 16:48 and would not return, bringing in Mammoths back up Murray.
With Meier off for hooking at 19:36, Raymond has a glorious chance blocked by a sliding Mikkola to keep the game at 4-1 heading into teh 3rd.
In the 3rd Patrice Bergeron tee's up a slapper from the circles and blows one past Murray to stake the Patriots to a 5-1 lead at 3:36.
The Mammoths put some shots on net but are having a hell of a time generating anything of any quality in the game to this point.
Play slows somewhat until 14:24 when Lindell is pushed into Murray who immediately grabs at his knee and has to be stretchered off as well.
Enter Mammoths coach and Gm Lawrence Chang for the rest of the game, albeit playing as Murray.
No further scoring or injuries as the clock runs out and the Patriots win 5-1.
Mammoths centers are sucking wind and team cohesion was sorely tested in this one. Absolutely lucky for the Patriots to injure this many players in one game.
Patriots were 43 shots with 10 quality and 5 goals. 1 PP, 4 ES.
Mammoths were 23 shots with 5 quality and one goal. 1 PP.
Game 2
Game 2 is a much different turn of fortune by the end.
The Mammoths start right off the faceoff with Tanev sneaking back door to put one past Kuemper only 48 seconds into the game.
Erikkson-Ek serves 2 minutes in the box after a bench minor is issued against the Patriots for harassing the ref's.
No damage on the ensuing power play, and the teams are playing really tight checking, scrum hockey for most of the period until Kucherov takes 2 minutes for tripping and Landeskog makes them pay by potting a PP goal at 14:24 to tie the game at 1-1.
Meier then makes it 2-1 off a feed from Bergeron and Nichushkin at 18:24 to send the Patriots into teh 2nd with a 2-1 lead.
The teams exchange goals in the 2nd period with Danault scoring for the Patriots at 2:48 and then Atkinson responds less than a minute later to keep the game at 3-2. Kucherov's late HS is blocked by Hakanpaa in the dying seconds to preserve the slim lead.
Trouble is brewing on the Patriots bench in the 3rd when Gudreau pounces on an errant pass up the middle by Petry, at :48 and pots a FC goal to tie the score at 3-3.
Thompson wrists a shot past Sorokin to put the Patriots up 4-3 at the 2:00 marker, but the Patriots seem to be falling over themselves and coughing up the puck at an alarming rate. This wont end well.
The teams are still working the corners and checking tight man to man coverage until Marchment slew foots Ekman-Larson and goes to the box at 15:36. Seguin wastes no time and picks the top corner to tie the game at 4-4 on the ensuing face off.
The Patriots crumble under the adversity, icing the puck, tying up for stoppages and generating zero offense, Coach O'Sheigh is spewing vitriol at his players by this point and that pretty much seals their fate.
Lucas Raymond slots a shot past Kuemper to give the Mammoths a 5-4 lead late and they hang on, with the Patriots failing to capitalize on an extra attacker for the final shift.
Mammoths steal one 5-4.
Kuemper was fucking dog shit in the game, in the 3rd alone Robertson had 3 Icings, 2 stoppages and a 5 instead of any shots, Landeskog had a 4, and 2 Icings, and Meier had 2 stoppages, and the Patriots gave up 4 Fc shots in the 3rd period alone. Absolutely abysmal period.
Patriots were 41 shots with 8 quality and 4 goals. 1 PP, 3 ES.
Mammoths were 20 shots 7 quality for 5 goals. 1 FC, 1 PP 3 ES.
Both teams make the most of their lucky streaks to split the series.
