In the inaugural bout between Houston and Shamrockville, we see the time keeper need a timeout to find new sheets to keep track of the penalties, half way through the game.
The first period sees a beleaguered Sarros keeping his team in the game, weathering a barrage of Patriots shots. Houston escapes only down 1-0 though being outshot 19 (4 quality) to 4 (1 quality).
6 minute into the 2nd period, all hell breaks loose. Zhadorov and Marchment square off at center ice in a tilt that goes through the TV timeout.Lindell and then Mikolla head off for roughing at 8:48 and 14:24 respectively to give Houston 2 PP opportunities, but Belfasts Alex Formenton provides the best 2 quality chances on those PP’s, only to have Sarros turn aside both SH chances.
This then is followed by Sprong and Mikolaa taking roughing minors, then Sissons and Nichushkin exchange unpleasantries, rounded out by Watson and Petry getting tangled up at the buzzer. 32 minutes in the 2nd period alone.
In between all these exchanges, the Patriots manage to pot another 2 goals with Robertson getting his 2nd of the game and Carlo adding another.
Patriots up 3-0 after 2.
The third period sees Eriksson-Ek go off at 4:00 for a Houston PP, but again Formenton spoils that with the only quality chance on the PK.
Landeskog takes a feed from Petry and Robertson to extend the lead to 4-0 and Nichushkin all but seals it at 15:12 off a break out pass from Carlo.
Oleksiak takes 2 minutes at 16:48 before Laine goes at 18:24, followed by Watson and Landeskog at 19:12 and Manson at 19:36.
To add a little insult to injury, Robertson scores the hat trick on the PP just before the final buzzer.
Patriots take game one by a 6-0 shutout.
Patriots were 6 goals (2 x PP) on 44 shots, 15 quality
Sun Dogs were 0 goals on 23 shots, 4 quality.
Patriots now 4-1-0-0 (Screw you Jarry)
Game 2 in Houston:
Déjà vu anyone?
This one starts out where the first game ended, with one wrinkle. Jarnkrok scores off the opening faceoff while Kuepmper was still adjusting his mask. However……. 2:00 in sees Jack Johnson and Niko Mikkolaa start the parade to the box with matching minors. 9:12 features Vrana and Manson with some mutual slashes. Not quite done being a dickhead, Johnson drops the gloves with Formenton at 11:12, Landeskog takes an unsprtsmanlike call at 12:24, Montour and Coleman go off for roughing, and Manson takes 2:00 for boarding.
There was also some hockey actually played…….Robertson converts on the Manson penalty and Thompson takes advantage of some 4v4 ice time to put the Patriots up 2-1 after one.
A visit to each teams dressing room between periods by the officiating squad seems to cool things down a bit, and we get a few more minutes of hockey in the second period.
Cool as things were, Sarros finally has had enough of Robertson camping in his kitchen and takes 2 minutes for a Billy Smith-esque slash. Nichushkin makes him pay off the puck drop, scoring a mere 12 seconds into the penalty, posting the Patriots lead to 3-1.
Manson and Petry get sent off at 4:00, which leads to another warning for both coaches from the officials.
Meier gets sent off for cross checking at 8:48 but no damage is done on the ensuing PP.
A brutal pass attempt by Nurse, gifts Landeskog with a FC goal at 12:48, extending the lead to 4-1 for the Patriots after 2 periods.
The third period sees the Patriots focus on hockey rather than teaching these upstarts any more lessons in pugilism. Goals by Eriksson-Ek 2:48, Thompson 6:48, Danault (PP) 15:12 and Nichuskin 19:55, sandwich the lone goal by Houston by Sprong at 8:00 to seal 8-2 victory.
Patriots were 8 goals (3 x PP) on 53 shots, 9 quality
Sun Dogs were 2 goals on 23 shots, 4 quality.
Patriots now 5-1-0-0 (Screw you Jarry)
