Cole Harbor flew in to Shamrockville on Monday to restart the Patriots season. Off the opening puck drop, Gabriel Landeskog pounces on an errant pass and puts the home team up 1-0. A mere 24 seconds later, he slots home his 2nd of the game past a shell shocked Marc-Andre Fleury.
Jet lag must have made the visitors cranky as this penalty filled affair starts off with Nick Bjugstad taking an ill-advised swipe at Jamie Oleksiak. The too towering players square off early and sit for 5 min respectively, after their fisticuffs.
The Patriots bench seem riled up by the obvious lack of an instigator penalty and the ref’s decide to throw their weight around after Blake Coleman sends Jack Roslovic through the glass and into the stands at 12:00. Roslovic would end up taking his ball and going home for the remainder of this one.
Penalties to Nichuskin at 10:00, followed by Meier at 12:48 and then Mikolaa at 14:24 lead to more protestation by the Patriots and gift the Butchers a PP goal by the traitorous Matthew Tkachuk.
A now irate Patriots squad quickly go back to work and Meier pounds a puck past Fleury, on a nice feed from Oleksiak to restore the 2 goal lead. Patriots up 3-1 after one.
The second period sees the penalties tilt to the Butchers end, after a phone call from the league offices and a change of officials. A Bribery scandal is now being investigated pertaining to the original officiating team and the new squad quickly evens the penalty situation up by assessing 3 penalties to the visiting Butchers.
Connor McDavid at 00:48, followed by Fleury at 2:24 throwing his stick and Bonino at 8:48 for diving round out the Butchers penalties. This allows the Patriots power play to score 2 more off shots from Meier and Robertson.
Fleury seems to settle down a bit and turns aside quality chances by Thompson and Robertson to hold the damage to a minimum and another ex-Patriot, Barbashev pots the Butchers 2nd PP goal of the game to keep some hope alive. Oleksiak takes offense to Barbashev’s celebration and sends him into the post. Barbashev would be -2 for the remainder, nursing some hurt feelings and asking for a wahmbulance. Patriots up 5-2 after two.
The 3rd period sees the Patriots pull away. After Nichushkin takes a slick pass from Marchment to make it 6-2, he returns the favor and Marchment seals the win with a wrister from the high slot to put home the Patriots 7th goal of the game.
Patriots were 7 goals (2 x PP) on 39 shots with 11 quality chances.
Butchers were 2 goals (2 x PP) on 28 shots 4 quality chances.
Patriots now 2-1-0-0 (screw you Tristan Jarry)
Return Game in Cole Harbor:
This game plays out eerily similar to game 1. Robertson scores early, Landeskog follows up with another PP goal and the Patriots are up 2-0 after the first.
Penalties are even with one minor aside, nice to see the officiating is competent this game.
The second period sees the Butchers sails deflated even further after Thompson and Scheifle score to make it 4-0. McDavid and Coleman get 2 min each for some glove washing after the 2nd goal and Petry and McNabb sit for some mutual slashes, but the will seems to be sapped from the Butchers. Patriots 4-0 after two periods.
The third period sees Reimer shelled even further with Robertson seemingly camped for half the period on his doorstep, potting 2 goals from in close, one of them screened in.
Once again the traitorous Tkachuk scores late to break the shut out bid but far too little too late. Patriots coast to a 6-1 win.
Patriots were 6 goals (1 PP) on 33 shots with 10 quality.
Butchers were 1 goal on 31 shots with 4 quality.
Patriots now 3-1-0-0 (Screw you Tristan Jarry)
