LOL 5 goals and an assist.....At least I have one functioning center for next year. OK two I suppose Bergeron is having an ok year too.
But this is a perfect example of why I dislike our roster limits. He was drafted 5 years ago, I traded for him 4 years ago and it was just last year that he finally got rolling. It's so hard to keep those draft picked players, while still fielding a full and playable roster, I hate giving up guys that I scout and draft or trade for only to have to be forced between cutting them 2 or 3 years in or keeping a veteran rostered player so I can fill games out.
I know, it is what it is, but I still hate it.

I think using Tage Thompson as an example to argue about making the roster sizes larger isn't really a good idea. Clearly you managed to protect him instead of dropping him for nothing. If you can give an example of someone of value you've had to drop (not trade), then we can start a discussion.
Congrats on Thompson.

Well part of that is hard because someone I drafted and had to drop may yet turn out to be useful, I wont know until they are and then it's too late. That's kind of the point.
But dropping Alex True, Zach Sanford, Marc Edward-Vlasic, Dennis Gilbert, Gabriel Carlsson, Libor Hajek, John Hayden, Devin Shore....I'm sure there are more. Some of these guys are decent players, some may be, and some are veterans that will have useful enough cards to be played.
I'm sure lots of the league has had to drop a guy they really didnt want to, maybe it's just me, *shrug*.
I'm not making an argument to revise the roster limits, Im merely pointing out that we really don't get enough time to assess some of our rookie picks and it sucks to have to debate dropping one or dropping a vet simply to avoid losing someone.
The 3 rookie spots does help, but I guess those of us that draft and keep fuller rosters, to cover for injuries or bad seasons or whatever, seem to "have to" shuffle these around more than I'd like.
It is what it is, I was merely pointing out my opinion on it, as to why we should be able to keep some of these guys that take longer to cook.
*** I also just noticed that nearly half of his points are on the PP so I guess his card will still stink LOL ***

Which players to keep and which to lose seems very much the NHL experience. The advantage we have is that we're using Year-1 cards, so we can see how skaters develop an extra year before drafting them. There is also plentiful information available about each skater these days. What we don't want our rules to accommodate is holding on to a skater because he might be useful some day. Some hard choices are part of being a GM. And there are always more skaters arriving by draft. I don't see an issue with having to release a team's 39th best player - there's almost a full team worth of cushion. And if a team has to make hard decisions about who to drop, then good for that team and it's player management strategy! I've not had any such hard choices and am always tickled when I see guys I've dropped pop up in the Rookie Draft. I'd like to see a protected list each year of 9 forwards, 5 defencemen, 3 goalies, all rookies from the last three drafts, and all others tossed in to a free agent pool to be distributed in a free agent draft after the rookie draft each year. But then the added complexity in team management might be a little daunting. Never in a million years would I want to see that.

it would be interesting to see other team management ideas similar or different to what Steve said. not saying we should change to anything else but it would be interesting to see what people come up with. haven't thought about it in any real detail but i wonder what playing under an actual NHL Salary cap would be like. would obviously have to look into exactly how injuries are applied versus the cap and stuff but that would almost guarantee a high turnover of players as we wouldn't have the luxury of setting our own salaries for players.

Oh I'd like to congratulate Tage Thompson for hitting 20 goals this season he's the 13 player to get there. Hughes injury puts him 1 off of 30 I wonder if anyone gets to 35 this season. So fun to watch
