I'm Seeing a trend in the NHL right now where it seems that teams really only have 4 defensemen.
Their top 4 are seeing significantly more minutes as a group than in previous seasons, it seems to me.
Most teams top 2 are seeing in excess of 22+ minutes, but it's the middle pairing that are also now seeing 22+ minutes as well. It seems that most teams 3rd pairing guys are only getting 12-14 minutes a night.
I fear that this will have some negative impact in our league, with these huge minute munching guys being unbalanced across our teams. And I think it might negatively impact the 3rd pairing defensemans values. Trying to find and obtain 4 of those 22-26+ minute guys isnt going to be feasible for everyone for sure.

Shifts are still a zero-sum game so to speak. Plus our teams are deeper than NHL teams by about 1/3rd.
While you may have trouble finding 4 x 4/4 defencemen, I'm not sure it will be an issue for us to get enough shifts to play. I get by with 4 x 3/3 defencemen. Managers may need to play some lower defence guys like I am to make up their shifts.
We'll probably need to pick and choose how we play those low shift guys with high defence more.

It's accelerated this year but the trend started back when most teams went to only one D on the first PP. If a team drew five minors a night that was two and a half shifts the D weren't going to get. Once it got to that first unit staying out for about 90 second on each man advantage it really pushed this skew. This pretty much assures that at least one of the team's top D would be rested after the PP and get the first shift taking even more time from those lesser D. If you're lucky you can find one of those 5th or 6th D who plays well in sheltered minutes and is a PP specialist to get a decent amount of shifts (or is a PK specialist on a team that takes a lot of penalties).

Does this get affected by the half shift being discussed in the other thread?

I don't see what the big issue is with the half shift. In most of the cases those half shifts get used up on PP or PK, or having that guy come out for a half shift after a penalty expires or what not. The half shift shouldn't even be a discussion. If you had everyone with full shifts, whether rounding up or down, you'd still end up with half shifts when guys take penalties etc. It's such a trivial issue, Im not sure we should spend any resources on it. Its simple, your guy plays the half, he gets tired, he comes off...it's not hurting anything.

We in the "regular shift for Brandon Montour" association laugh at your description of a 3/3 defenceman as 'a lower D defenceman'

Yes but Montour also had a forwards range, which certainly helps.
