Game 1 Oxford @ Cole Harbour
The crowd was abuzz with anticipation as the new look Butchers took to the ice for the first time since being swept in the finals and for the first time since trading away forward Kyle Connor, long time line mate of Connor McSaviour. The first period saw plenty of shots on goal, but few chances being generated, McDavid opened the scoring at 5:12 to bring the crowd to their feet, but Oskar Sundquist replied less than five minutes later to knot up the score. Veteran Kris Letang was rocked by a hit that the league will surely want to take another look at, but he was able to stay in the game, despite being visibly wobbly at times.
Two minutes into the second period Alex Nedeljkovic took a puck to the mask and had to be helped to the dressing room, pressing Tristan Jarry into service for the remainder of the game. Jarry did not seem to be ready for action and Matthew Tkachuk put the Butchers back in front on their first scoring chance of the period. Jarry the spent the rest of the period fishing the puck out of the back of his net as the Butchers converted three more goals before the horn sounded (Letang, Donato and Roslovic). The third period saw little change as the two teams exchanged goals around the middle of the frame (Fox and Niederreiter for those keeping track) and that was all she wrote.
Final Score: Oxford 2 (35 shots, 4 IR) @ Cole Harbour 6 (43 shots, 9 IR)
Of note: The Butchers failed to score on any of their four powerplay opportunities, but did score twice on delayed calls.
Game 2 Cole Harbour @ Oxford
Determined to keep the momentum from game one the visitors came out flying, with Jeff Carter potting two goals on the first shift of the game. From there, the refs were determined to take control of the game, and neither side was really able to muster anything. A parade of penalties dominated the remainder of the first period and most of the second. The Butchers got two more goals from Brandon Saad and Nick Bonino to extend the lead to 4-0 after forty minutes. Once again, Alex Nedeljkovic was unable to complete the game and had to head to the locker room nine minutes early. Jarry came in, but was rarely tested. Trevor Moore provided the lone highlight for the home side breaking the shut out bid with under five minutes to go.
Final Score: Cole Harbour 4 (42 shots, 8 IR) @ Oxford 1 (32 shots, 4 IR)
Of Note: Cole Harbour again failed to convert on three powerplay attempts, though they scored again on a delayed call. Also, PIM by period: 1st period saw 14 total PIM, 2nd period was 22, 3rd period 4.
Cole Harbour sits at 2-0.
