Hey all,
as I have now put the final pieces in motion for my road trip out west for the draft and a week or so after, it seems like now's the perfect time to introduce myself to half of you -- and jog cringe-y memories in the other half of you!
For the new faces: hello, my name is Charles, I'm originally from Winnipeg, where I live now; and during my period of temporary derangement in Calgary between ages 6 and 33, I had the honor to make a whole lot of great friends in the gaming community here. Indeed, reuniting with those friends is my primary motivation for joining the league this year; the secondary motivation, of course, will be making new ones.
About myself personally, I do love me a math-based simulation of, well, anything; somewhere in my storage is the gold medal I got from the old Mount Royal College "computer programming competitions" for my mathematical modelling of roller derby results as a predictive tool for setting sports lines. Oh yeah, gambling, that's my other passion
In fact, the "straw that stirred the drink" that ultimately sealed the deal for me, was when Daniel told me about the excellent work that Calgary gaming stalwart Steve Perkins put in to refining the basic "Faceoff" model and bringing it from the "popularity contest" age to the analytics age. Indeed, reviewing this year's cards has been a bit of a shock, to put it mildly. But there is nothing more tranquil than the peace of mind that comes in trusting an expert's work and I look forward to learning the ins and outs of these layouts.
For the old faces: you probably remember me as the thorny rulebook-scouring "Magic: The Gathering" player, who looked at everything as a mathematical and logistical exercise first and foremost. And while I won't bore you with my exploits (though I'm sure Nash and Al Leung and Daniel remember them well ) suffice it to say, part of my orientation here has been an introduction to the culture of the league -- a close knit group of friends who are themselves simulating the role of 'hockey manager' in a reasonable and realistic way, and who share that common interest to unite them. That's something I didn't fully understand 25 years ago when I first applied to the CHL, but something I understand well now. I look forward to my new league-mates sharing in that expectation with me
Other than that? I still have a sad attachment to checking forwards and still have an insufferable partisan bias to Winnipeg, as you probably noticed by "srs will trade for Adam Lowry" email but we'll iron that out in the months ahead.
So, thank you for having me, and see you at the expansion draft!
Charles,
Houston Sundogs.
