In a battle for first overall or first pick overall, this should have been a big mismatch, but both games turned out to be a very hard fought 1 goal victory (both for Cole Harbour).
In Revelstoke, the first period was a goaltending clinic by Sorokin, stopping all 15 shots, including 6 high danger scoring chances, and letting the Mammoths get their feet under them after the first 12 minute assault where they did not manage to take a shot, only watching the Butchers shoot at the net. With Sorokin's heroics, the Mammoths were able to take a 1 goal lead from Matheson's powerplay marker on the very first shot of the period for Revelstoke.
The second period was poor at best for Cole Harbour, with only 4 shots (2 high danger) on net, and Sorokin letting the first of the two in, before the Mammoths would take a 3 goal lead on secondary, and tertiary scoring, from Tanev, Athanasiou, and Ceci. The Butchers were also caught a few times by the Revelstoke forecheck.
The wheels finally fell off the Mammoth-wagon in the 3rd period, where the Connors and Pacioretty took over, despite Ceci scoring his second of the game, to come back all the way from the 3 goal deficit to tie it at 5-5.
Overtime was dominated by Cole Harbour, with Tkachuk scoring the game winner less than 2 minutes into extra time. Sorokin finished the night with 8 high danger saves out of 14, while Reimer was mediocre in allowing 5 on 8.
Final score: 6-5 for Cole Harbour, in OT
The second game was the complete opposite of the first game, where it was the definition of low event hockey. Despite taking 33 shots from the Mammoths, they only managed one high danger chance of their own before finally capitalizing in the 3rd period on a bad turnover to score their only goal of the game, while the Butchers managed a reasonable amount of quality chances at 6, with two of them getting past Sorokin. Ryan O'Reilly finally broke his streak of no goals, with the powerplay winner just past 6 minutes into the 3rd frame. This game was surprisingly defensive, for a Mammoths team not known all season for playing well in their own zone.
Final score: 2-1 for Cole Harbour.
The Mammoths are looking like a near lock for last place, at 2-12-0-2, 6 pts.
