Commence clickbait. I have compared the average D/C of all NHL players in 2024 with those on CHL teams or within the Rookie and Free Agent pools. My assumption was that CHL teams would exhibit a higher D/C ratio due to the superior caliber of players they recruit. But was I in for a shock. More after the break. ^^ The BreakAverage D/C | Pos | NHL | CHL | Average Defense | F | 2.12 | 2.07 | Average Defense | D | 3.14 | 3.16 | Average Clearing | D | 3.13 | 3.12 |
The averages look very similar. However, there is a significant difference in the number of players available. More after the break. ^^ The BreakLeague | Avg Total GP | Skaters/GP | NHL | 1,458 | 17.8 | CHL | 2,189* | 26.7* |
Given that the CHL has nine additional players per game available for selection, it would be reasonable to anticipate a higher average D/C for the CHL players who see game time. But then, didn't I start off with an assumption? I don't want to scroll up, so I'll assume I did. Availability does not figure into ratings, so what this little exercise shows me is that (1) maths are hard, (2) our league is dead average at picking defensive talent, (3) the handsome guy that creates the ratings does an admirable job in adverse conditions and under extreme duress, and (4) deciding whether to spell it "defence" or "defense" is nervewracking. This is boring. I'm bored. PS: Doesn't an average defense imply calculated defense scores? Shh.

Can't wait till all forwards are 2 Def and all defensemen are 3/3. It'll be so much easier to make the cards. One card, just change the name. ;-)
