The NHL is definitely a gate driven league (again, a large part of that is due to the labour stoppages, whether warranted or not, that is a large part of why the NHL TV rights in the US went from ESPN to OLN and why it continues to be difficult to find games broadcast to US audiences), though I fail to see how that supports a hard cap (and if you want to get specific, a triple hard cap, capped on years, capped on percentage of the cap, capped on rookie contracts). Looking at the participants in the last 10 championships here is what I found
NHL 15 teams made the finals at least once MLB 14 teams made the finals at least once
Practically the same, despite the different models.
Either way, there is obviously nothing that any of us can do that will influence the end result and we are allowed to have different opinions on the validity of the cap. I would just much rather see a healthy league, and personally, I would rather see more of the money I spend to support the league go to the players than the owners. If that means that rich teams like the Leafs need to give cash to the poor teams like the Coyotes so that they can pay their players, I am plenty okay with that. Afterall, it doesn't matter how much you pay your players, you have to have opponents to play against.

Interesting takes on the cap issues for sure. I'd have to investigate a good, successful luxury tax option, which might make the issue much more palatable.
I just worry that there are players who are pricing themselves, and subsequently other players, out of the price range of the smaller market teams is all.
I'd like to see the players get more revenue %-wise as well, but they aren't the ones ponying up billions for arenas and district developments. Sure the tax payers also contribute, on wildly varying scales, in new arenas, but they also benefit in most cases by these new home districts, malls and all of the associated builds that come with.
Obviously more revenue would allow for that, but until the NHL is getting the same TV revenue that the other sports do, I think it'll always be a case where the players don't make as much as they do in those other sports unfortunately.
